In a recent rat study conducted to evaluate the effects of turmeric on the liver’s ability to detoxify xenobiotic (toxic) chemicals, levels of two very important liver detoxification enzymes were significantly elevated in rats fed on turmeric as compared to controls. The researchers commented, “The results suggest that turmeric may increase detoxification systems in addition to its anti-oxidant properties…Turmeric used widely as a spice would probably mitigate the effects of several dietary carcinogens.”
Curcumin has long been connected to liver health. Numerous studies have linked it to effectively combating liver cancer and improving liver fibroids. Curcumin has been has been also examined in several metal toxicity studies and was found to have a therapeutic protective effect in preventing metal toxification (pre-treatment) and had further detox effect in post treatment after intoxication. In case of mercury toxification, curcumin treatment was also effective in reversing serum changes.
